A budget replacement mouse

Between 3 months and 2 years after buying your Amiga, you're going to want
a new mouse. Why? Because the standard Commodore mouse just died.
Nothing on that old mouse seems to work properly. So, you start looking
around. Some people go to the repair store, buy a new Commodore mouse, and
learn about Commodore mice the expensive way. Commodore was never famous
for its mice.
The Roctec Amiga mouse, works well. It retails for $49.95 from Computer
Spot. The specifics of it (for those of you into these sorts of things):
DIMENSIONS : 105 x 66 x 28.5 (mm)
DESKTOP FRICTION : 100 GM
TRACKING BALL : SILCONE RUBBER COATED
ENCODER : OPTICAL ROTARY TYPE
RESOLUTION : 200 DPI (Dot Per Inch)
MOUSE CABLE : 6 FEET LONG
TRACKING SPEED : 500 mm per second
As you may or may not have noticed, it has a six (6) foot long mouse
cable. This sounds extremely long, and it is, in comparison to the
Commodore mouse, but it's not long enough to get in the way. This is a
very good length for a mouse cable, and you're not going to run out of
cable, while moving your mouse.
The mouse is ergonomically designed. This means that it fits to your hand
well, and won't cause much strain after prolonged use. It also rolls very
easily, in comparison to the standard mouse that came with your computer.
The buttons are microswitched, and click audibly, although not loudly
enough to worry about.
Quibble
I only have one thing to point out about this mouse that is not altogether
good. When I plugged in my Commodore Mouse, as well as this one (two
player Lemmings, you know!), then the Roctec mouse refused to move the
pointer, dispite an incredible effort made by me to rescue my quickly dying
lemmings. Later I swapped the cables of the two mice, but to no effect.
This is not an incredibly serious problem, but definitely worth looking
into, if two-player lemmings your style. I'm not sure, it might be just my
mouse, but ask for a demonstration of the two mice before you buy one, just
in case.
The whole mouse is very good value, considering that the Commodore mouse
costs $50. I mean, this one is cheaper, if only by five cents. Besides, a
decent Amiga mouse is very important, since most programs are incredibly
difficult to use without one.
The Amiga is a mouse operated computer. If you don't want to pay top
dollar (for a Golden Image Optical Mouse), then this mouse is just fine.
